Asia Cruise : Abu Dhabi to Singapore

Dubai

Burj Khalifa

Day 1 : Dubai!  We have arrived

Well let’s try this again! 18 months ago we booked this trip….. and here we are. Our first day in Dubai! After a long ( and sleepless) 13 hour flight we finally arrived. Amazing how efficient some airports are…. Getting off the plane and into the hotel shuttle ( with a quick duty free stop) was 35 minutes! After a quick rest at our hotel, we took an Uber to the Dubai Mall…. The world’s largest mall by area…. The size of 50 football fields. We quickly wandered through a small portion of the mall and headed put doors to explore. Wow! What a site! The Burj Khalifa… the world’s tallest building standing 163 floors! It’s huge and beautiful especially as the sunset reflected off the metal… wow! We heard the water fountain show was good so hung around to see. At 6pm the lights dimmed an the music cranked! Then came the water show…. Amazing! As expected, much bigger than Vegas with spouts of water shooting upwards to 275 meters…. That’s 900 feet! After watching 2 shows it was time for a quick bite to eat…. Lucky for us a family just left so we got an outside table right at the edge with amazing views of the water fountain and Burj. Then came the bid surprise…. A laser light show on the Burj along with the accompanying water show! Incredibly beautiful… you could hear everyone ooing and awing! After the final show, it was time to line up for a taxi back to the hotel…. There must have been over 500 people in line! But a it went fairly quickly…. After about 40 minutes we were in the car and on our way to a good sleep. Good 1st night in Dubai!

Day 2

Burj Al Arab Jumeirah

Today we headed out to explore the city with our organized half day tour. We checked out of our hotel and headed into town to store our luggage at our friends ( Chris and Brad from San Diego) hotel. Then off we go. First stop was the Sheiks residence. Could only see it from a distance but a beautiful palace with impeccably groomed grounds. Next stop was on the outer ridge of the breakwall of Palm Island. The largest man man island in the world.... for now any way. They are currently building 2 additional islands much bigger. Only in Dubai! Off to see the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah.... the world's only 7 Star hotel ( home at last!) NOT! It sits alone on a small man made island looking like the sail of a magnificent sailing ship. Private access with heliport (of course). From there, we take a water taxi ride to the old gold and spice souks of Dubai. We walked the narrow alleyways looking in the shops and being offered many goods at "the best prices". After half an hour it's back to the van for our final destination... the Burj Khalifa. In line we go and then up, up and up to the 125 floor observation area. 60 seconds in the elevator... that's it. Guess what? It's the fastest elevator ride in the world! Magnificent views from there. It's incredible how much construction is being done in Dubai. Everywhere you look are cranes.... and according to our guide, 20% of the world's cranes are in Dubai. Not sure that's exactly true, but probably close as that's all you see. We've been told that they are upping their game to make tourism their main resource as Dubai is expected to run out of oil in about 2 years. After spending some time snapping pictures ( and selfies) it's time to decend for a quick bite before heading back to Chris and Brad's hotel. We gather our luggage, hail an Uber and check in at our new hotel for the night. A quick bite to eat, and drinks a with our friend Sue in the hotel bar then it's off to bed. Another adventure awaits us tomorrow as we head to Abu Dhabi. Good night Dubai! Thanks for a great day.
